Online Trainings
There is self-paced online training available on the West Virginia STARS website. Two trainings are of particular importance to those working in In-Home Family Education:
The first is Making A Difference: Mandate to Report, Responsibility to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect. Created by TEAM West Virginia and modified for online learning by West Virginia STARS, this 2-hour training is completely online and can be completed at the user’s pace, stopping and starting as needed. Register for the course, move through the modules, and score an 80% on the post-test to receive course credit. You have 2 opportunities to take the test. If, after 2 chances, you do not score 80%, you must re-register for and complete the course again. You have 30 days to complete the course.
The second course is Say YES To Safe Sleep For Babies Educator Training, provided through a partnership through TEAM West Virginia and the CAMC Health Education Research Institute, published to West Virginia STARS with the West Virginia Home Visitation Program.
**Staff of all home visitation programs should complete the new Say YES To Safe Sleep For Babies module, which can be used to train new staff, as a refresher course for existing staff, or as an annual competency training tool.**
Candice Lefeber (formerly Hamilton), Executive Director of the American Academy of Pediatrics, WV Chapter, provides opening remarks to the two-part module, which can be viewed incrementally, and on any mobile device.
Part 1, an Overview of Sleep Related Infant Deaths, is presented by Dr. Rachel Moon, Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Task Force on SIDS, and SIDS researcher at the University of Virginia, who covers the latest research and recommendations on infant safe sleep from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the impact of risk factors such as maternal smoking, and recent findings about the impact of social norms and social networks on the acceptance of safe sleep practices.
Part 2 focuses on the Campaign with Conversations Approach, a family centered model which integrates promotion of safe sleep and issues such as breastfeeding, and is presented by Dr. Suzanne Bronheim, Adjunct Associate Research Professor in the Department of Pediatrics within the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development. To highlight the concepts of the model, two brief vignettes are presented by Lee Ann Romeo, a registered nurse, and Beverly Kitchen, a registered nurse and Regional Care Coordinator with Right From The Start.
This course follows the same 80% testing requirement as noted above. Once you enroll, you have 30 days to complete the course.
To find and register for either course, log into the West Virginia STARS Website, navigate to “Course Catalog” using the menu on the left and choose “Self-Paced” from the dropdown box to see all self-paced courses available. The Say YES To Safe Sleep For Babies Educator Training also qualifies for two hours of continuing education credits for physicians, nurses and social workers. The online trainings below are not WV STARS approved. You may use them for up to 15 STARS credits in a Career Pathway Cycle. In order to receive WV STARS credit, use this form: Non-STARS Training Submission Form
You will need to add the appropriate Behaviors and Skills to the form from the West Virginia Core Knowledge and Competencies (CKC) for Early Childhood Professionals. You can copy and paste the Behaviors and Skills from the online CKC.
